Ah, Sicily. The largest of the Italian islands and one of the pearls of Southern Italy will forever be a part of the collective imagination due to beloved TV character Sophia Petrillo’s whimsical storytelling on Golden Girls. But beyond the whimsy of 1922, today this Mediterranean island continues to beckon travellers with its stunning landscapes, cultural treasures and more importantly for some, its elevated cuisine. Here are just a few of the dishes you should try when your Encore Club travels take you to Italy.

Sfincione, not your ordinary pizza

Made since the 17th-century with a crust that’s more breadlike than pizza, these thick, spongy slices are topped with tomatoes, onions, occasionally a few anchovies and grated caciocavallo cheese, seasoned with a pinch of oregano. The perfect, warm, savoury snack!

Macco, maccu or maccu di fave

This creamy, delicious soup also dates back to earlier centuries and is a staple on the menus of many restaurants and homes around the island. Often prepared with pasta, macco is made with fresh or dried fave (or broad beans), wild fennel, olive oil, salt, pepper and onions with a touch of tomatoes.

Arancini, a mouthwatering surprise

Indulge in one of these fried rice balls, and you might find anything from meat ragu to mozzarella to peas waiting inside. Among the most popular Sicilian street foods, these are the southern cousin of Rome’s cheese-filled suppli.

Cannoli, what’s not to love?

Consisting of tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, these delicious snacks are filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing sweetened ricotta and often topped off with candied fruit, pistachios, or chocolate chips.

Sicily’s cosmopolitan blend of cultures and the island’s abundance of naturally grown produce and fresh seafood have created a cuisine that’s fresh, varied and absolutely delicious. Encore Club gives you the flexibility to visit Sicily to taste these dishes and more – at a fraction of the cost of typical hotel rates!
